Personal:

I am a 52 yr. old single father of four children.  I am retired after injuring my back in 2000. I had back surgery, stopped running, and gained about 80 pounds. Decided to take my health into my own hands....lost 100 pounds, went to Nepal and trekked for two months in the Himalayas...climbed almost 18,000 ft.....felt so proud of myself....began running again. I qualified for Boston in Oct. 2009. I have shifted my focus now on ultra-marathons with the hope to run my first this year.

I really misjudged the expected weather conditions when I packed to come out here. Apparently, this area has not seen this type of weather for many years. Today, there is major flooding everywhere.....in fact, the gym I ran in today closed down shortly after my run because water was coming in. Three more days and I will be returning to Windsor....hopefully to nicer weather, but these three weeks with family has been wonderful!

My son bought me a great book for christmas called 'Running & Philosophy'..a marathon for the mind. It really sums up  what running means to me. As one person put it...'Every runner who has ever pondered the pleasure of pain, wondered about the duality of mind and body, or felt the artistic beauty of a perfect set of 800m repeats will enjoy this book'.

Its not a 'how to' type of read, but rather the relationship between running and life.....philosophically! I love it, and would suggest to anyone who has not read this book to get it.

Nice running this week. If you've been used to 40-50 miles weeks, ramp it up to 50-60 a week for a month or so (not much over 60). If that becomes comfortable, work from there. Too much, too soon could get you injured.

Hey Brian,

Still going to try and run 22 on Friday. Might do some out and backs so I can mix up the pace with you. For example run from my mom and dads and then back to the pond and then we will run around the pond at different paces so I can speed up then do an out and back easy. Food for thought? Are you up for that many miles? We can also store a few bottles around the pond etc. Hopefully its not too snowy so we can do this.

Brian,

Seattle's marathon on June 27 is the first at that date. I keep checking to see how the course is set up but still no course map online. It is a rock n roll marathon. Here is the site. http://www.rnrseattle.com/

My running plan for 2009, based on lessons learned from 2008, and from advice from very helpful fellow bloggers....consistency is key....build of solid base of 50-60 miles per week, and when I feel comfortable with that, I will add 1 day of speed work per week. Every 4 weeks, I will add a recovery week of approximetely 30 miles. This will take some self-disipline, but I am determined to get a BQ this year. I am at 52 miles this week, so I'm going to take today and tomorrow off and do a long run on Sunday. Any suggestions out there?.

Rather than take 2 days off in a row, I'd suggest take one off and use the other day to do a recovery run (1 to 1 1/2 minutes below marathon pace). Ideally, you should get the best results by running 6 days a week and spreading out most of the volume equally (exception: weekly long run). Just my 2 cents.

Nice week of running...great start towards your BQ!

Cloudy, 10 F ...feels like -8  and winds out of the SW @ 16 mph.

My objective today was to end the week with a recovery run @ about 1 minute slower than marathon pace. Did 10 miles at a pace that was as slow as I could tolorate, and to my surprise, I ran at my marathon pace of 8.0 minutes....very strange, although I did feel very good today after not running yesterday. 8 minute pace on the tread mill feels so much faster than on the road....must be the boredom of running indoors!  Good week.

Nice run today. With yesterday off, you probably didn't really need recovery. As long as the form's good and you felt comfortable, not need to go slower.

Conditions were nice today for an outside run, except that the mild temps made for lots of slush! Sunny skies, 37 F and winds out of the W @ 12 mph. Ran 18 miles as an endurance run. Felt good up untill the last 2 miles....really had to work hard to complete this run, but I'm glad I got it in. I have not run this distance since before the fall marathon last year.

Nice week of running! Now that you're starting to firmly establish the 60-70 mile base, be careful to listen to your body. Stay consistent, yet don't be afraid to give an occasional rest day (like today) or a really slow day if necessary. Keep it up and you're well on your way to Boston.

Great run Brian.

Make sure you take it easy next week regarding a long run, you don't want to do too many back to back long runs. I can't remember if you ran 20 plus miles last week or not.

Your on a roll and I don't want to see an injury.

Make sure you hydrate extra due to the flu.

From rockness18 on Mon, Feb 16, 2009 at 18:53:44

Nice run...most running plans emphasize a 20-miler no more than every other week. I took the same route as you this week due to free day + crummy forecast for this upcoming weekend. If you do back to back weekends, just be careful to listen to your body and definitely go slow the next day. Great job!

I thought I shook off this flu bug, but it came back to haunt me a bit....not like Sunday, but I'm feeling a bit sick, and very weak.....guess it would be a good idea to listen to my body and rest up today, although I always feel off not running or working out at the gym.....for some reason, I feel that taking a day off will jeaperdize my level of fitness, and I know thats not true. Anyways, I will plan to do an outside run tomorrow if weather permits.

Brian,

Too many week to week long runs, I am worried as your chiropractor that you will run out of steam and get an injury or an immune problem. I may be wrong but your training is more for a ultra marathon not a marathon. My worry is the long runs that count 5 and 3 weeks out from Ottawa will be tough because your tired.

I think you should do some races like yesterday and some speed and hills as well as a long run every other week.

But then again maybe I am just jealous!!

Talk to you soon, looks like the running clinic will start the first week of May, lots of people are joining, fun.

From rockness18 on Mon, Mar 09, 2009 at 15:45:01 from 69.183.232.200

Nice run. Most advanced training marathon schedules recommend a 20-mile run every other week at the most. On an off week perhaps run a 12, 14, or 16. Or if you want to keep the mileage up, run two 10-milers in a day- one morning, the other afternoon. Most importantly, listen to your body. Some folks can take more pounding than others. Don't get sucked in by the "mileage board" if it's causing you to experience overtraining systems or pain.

Again, nice run. The improvement's beginning to show.

Great run and also some great advice above. 21M at better than MP is quite a workout, now you need a lot of recovery runs and shorter stuff to balance this hard workout so you don't create an opportunity for injury.

Good call! I did the same thing yesterday. Your mileage has been awesome, so you are wise to listen to your body. I've heard it's good to have a lower week if you've spent 3 weeks of high mileage or mileage increase. For example, after 3 60-70 miles weeks, do a 50-60 mile week. It gives your body a little bit of a break or time to adjust and often allows you to push even stronger once you go back to the higher mileage. Keep up the good work!

Brian,

Do you normally warmup before stretching? (5-10 minutes on bike, treadmill or stairmaster nice and slow). I've heard stretching can actually cause injury (slight tears) without a basic "warm-up" to get the muscles loose.

I hope it's nothing serious and the rest time is effective.

A beautiful day in Washington.....sunny skies, calm breeze, and mild temps of 55 F....what a welcome relieve after this weeks rain.

I decided to do a longer trail run....again on the Snoquamie Valley trail...to the Snoquamie falls, then back to North Bend and I kept going as the trail led to higher elevations....great workout going up hill for a few miles. Felt so good today on that trail in this great weather!

Total time for run was 2 hours, 2 minutes....average pace of 8.08 minutes.

Going to hike up Mount Si tomorrow... 4 mile hike up.

Just a quick question...how is 8 minute pace a recovery pace if 8:12 is your target marathon pace?

You appear to have dramatically increased the mileage lately (208 miles in April, 409 in May is a huge increse) and run close to or faster than target MP all the time. I would really worry that between the mileage increase and pacing you are pushing into inevitable injury territory.

In referance to your comments...my MP from 2008 was from a first marathon I ever ran...2009 paces on based on my most recent 10 K run and have got considerably faster from all my training this year.

MP is 7.31; Tempo is 6.50 to 7.07 and recovery is 9.01....so there are no two tempos in a row..a MP run on Sunday and a mix between a MP and Tempo on Monday.

Brian,

Your miliage is very impressive but as your friend, running club coach and your chiropractor I am a touch concerned about your health. Symptoms are always the last to show up and I have seen a drastic increase in your miles the last 2 months and to loose 16 lbs in 2 months or so scares me a little. I know your built for distance, god knows I could never do what your doing but I don't see the need to run that many miles unless you plan on running an ultra, meaning 50 miles or more.

I may be wrong Brian but I know how much you love running and I don't want you to have an injury like you had over a year ago. I also may be wrong because I only run marathons and maybe you are right on track for ultra's, I just care and don't want to see you injured or have any body systems get sick. Hopefully we can get some insight from some more experienced runners on this website.

Have some rest this weekend and enjoy your camping.

Todd

Todd....

Thank you for your comments/concerns. I value your opinion, and to be honest, I agree. As runners, we have a tendency to be somewhat compulsive....something I battle with all the time, and hopefully, I will get to know myself enough to find that balance between the running and rest.

I do plan on using next week as a recovery week....drop my miles down to about 70 or so.

From rockness18 on Fri, Jun 19, 2009 at 09:34:34 from 69.183.233.238

Brian,

I've kept fairly quiet, since I have never seen you and you seem to be handling the mileage well (based on your logging comments). At the same time, Jeff Shadley (elite master) expressed grave concern last month about your sudden increase. He definitely knows more about running than me. If you have any kind of injury history, back off a bit. It's not worth it. I've only been on this blog for a year and many of last year's leading mileage runners have been struggling with injuries this year. Personally, if I were you, I would spend the summer in the 70-90 range with a low mileage week worked in each month (50-70). If you can handle it for a year or so and then want to ramp it up, it's your call...just some friendly input.

Just curious- is there a reason you are doing marathon-length training runs every week? I count 6 runs of 20+ miles since May 31, incl. 4 of 26+ miles. Most people, even elites, do not run more than one 20-24 mile run every other week, or 2 runs every 3 weeks. Unless you are Michael Wardian (or some other super-human, which you very well may be), doing this many long runs puts you at high risk for injury. Plus, it is hard to recover from runs that long, so it would likely impact your ability to train hard/fast. Maybe your body can handle it, but I'm just trying to figure out why you are training this much. Are you following some specific training program that suggests this many long runs?

From Brian on Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 02:39:07 from 24.57.221.38

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance

Going to use this week as a recovery week....keep the miles down to about 60-70. I noticed in the last couple of weeks that although I have the endurance for these long runs, the added mileage over the last couple of months leaves my legs feeling tired enough that I cannot seem to get in some quality runs....example....short pickups during long runs, and separate speed and hill workouts. I need more recovery time to allow for more key run workouts. I am now comfortable with the fact that I have achieved a solid base...I need to get in those key runs to help develop more strength and speed, which involves changing my weekly workout plan.

Today....going to spend the day out on my mountain bike enjoying this nice weather.

Bike ride in county......40 km.

You've definitely have the base. Once you drop the mileage and do the speedwork you will notice an increased peformance when doing speedwork. This is because the aerobic ability will not have to be worked on just anaerobic.

Great mileage and great strategy you have for the upcoming weeks.

From Brian on Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 13:57:41 from 24.57.221.38

Kory....Thanks for that. I have one question....for marathon training, should I focus more on mile repeats with speed....or 800 meters....or 400 meters...whats your thoughts on that.

Thanks....Brian.

From Kory on Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 15:01:41 from 134.50.89.55

Tempos are better for marathon training. Where you can run about 30-40 continuous minutes just below your MP pace.

If your going to do repeats the longer the

better so mile repeats are the best.

Also during long runs (don't do this every time) through in some MP miles to get your speed going and used to running at that pace.

Why Tempos? Their good because it makes you work hard for a long time just below your MP but not reaching a Threshold pace. In theory this makes the MP easier over time.

From Brian on Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 16:29:24 from 24.57.221.38

Kory....Thanks for that valuable information....will do a 10 mile run tomorrow, through in some 1-2 mile tempos.....maybe 3....see how that goes.

From Kory on Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 16:43:20 from 134.50.89.55

Perfect gradually ease into it and by time you won't believe the difference in your speed. If you do this once a week I can guarantee you will PR and of course with a PR your faster :-).

Running From Cancer half marathon race.....a PR for me....never ran a half in a race and was not sure how I would do....my best half was my half split in last years marathon which was 1 hr, 39 minutes, so this is a great improvement for me! .,..an average pace of 6.53 minutes. Felt strong the entire run.....started with a very conservative pace and passed many people, then around mile 5, I caught sight of a friend.....2nd place female runner....and she had a good pace, so I decided to attempt and catch her and maybe keep up with her for as long as I could. I caught her at the turn around point and I was able to keep up with her pace and at mile 9 had enough left that I picked up my pace, passed her and caught about 5 or 6 more runners....all in all a great run for me and a huge confidence builder for my try at a  BQ in October in Detroit.

Thanks Sasha....I'm really seeing an improvement since increasing my weekly mileage, but I need to do more speed work. I love the long runs, but there is not enough left in the tank during the week to do some quality speed workouts, so I will modify my training schedule during these summer months....but all in all, I'm very motivated with the recent results.

From Jon on Tue, Jul 28, 2009 at 14:30:49 from 138.64.2.76

Once you have a good base and can easily handle long runs, that is when adding the speedwork can really be the topping on the sundae. Sounds like you may be at that point.

Brian relax a bit, its not you its for everyone. Yesterday I ran 11 miles knowing that I would run a speed workout in the afternoon. You have to adapt to the season's. Split up your runs if you have to run outside or leave your watch on the table and not worry about pace/time.

food for thought.

Hope your mom is doing ok.

From Brian on Mon, Aug 10, 2009 at 11:30:54 from 24.57.193.132

Thanks for that Todd...needed to hear that!...it does get frustrating.

My Mom is getting worse by the day....its getting more and more difficult to feed her and that requires more time in the evenings....a reason why its been impossible to get to the running clinic on Tuesday night, but I have to do what is necessary...hopefully, I can find a way to work it in to my schedule....I need those hill and track workouts.

From smally on Mon, Aug 10, 2009 at 13:45:18 from 209.195.72.107

Tough Brian, hang in there and be there for her, that is really all you can do.

I almost ran outside, I would have been stormed on.

See you soon

I noticed that I lost about 7 lbs. of water weight on these 10 mile runs the last few days, when I usually will only loose about 4 lbs. on a 20 or more mile run. Incredible how much I sweat!

Would like to get a long run in tomorrow so it will be an early one!

rest today......last long run tomorrow before the marathon...

Just looking back at my year...comparing it to last year:

In 2008 prior to the October marathon I got in 9 long runs of 20-plus miles and a total  of about 1500 miles from January to October.

This year I got in 16 long runs of 20-plus miles, 5 long runs of 26 miles, 1 long run of 27.34 miles and 1 long run of 32 miles and a total thus far of about 2600 miles. I also ran a PB in a half-marathon race in July of 1:30:13.

I feel more prepared now than ever for a good fall marathon....

Your fitness is there. Don't do anything crazy to try to make up for lost time. 5-6 miles a day should suffice, with maybe just 2-4 on the two days preceding marathon. You're in the taper anyway, so may actually have been good to get a little rest.

I hope you feel well soon and good luck this weekend!

Well, I finally did it....Qualified for Boston.

I set out today with the goal to qualify, so I decided to run a very conservative race and meet this goal. I am so bad at writing these reports and unfortunetly, I did not wear a garmin and time splits have not yet been posted. I know that I ran the first half at a clock time of 1:40, and at the 20 mile mark I was at 2:36....at which point I figured that qualifying was well in my reach. At the 23 mile mark my time was 3:03. The weather was perfect with calm winds and sunshine. There was a field of about 4000 marathoners and about 19,000 participants in all, so the first 5 miles we were almost tripping over each other. I decided to stick with the 3:30 pacer, but after the field thinned out....around the 5 mile mark, I went alone and ran my own race.

I'm thrilled to have finally qualified and now I will need to take my training to another level!

....very sad to hear that 3 people died today running this marathon....not much details available yet....very unfortunate.

Thanks Dave....For the most part, I feel almost 100% recovered. Plan on a 14-16 miler tomorrow to end the week.

I definetely need to incorporate much more speed/hills in my training now!

I will be in Seattle for the month of November and naturally, there are many hills, so I will take advantage of that.

Sounds like you are enjoying total recovery and your plans for a half and a full in November is incredible....Good luck1

outside run.....sunny, 34 F and winds out of the S @ 17 mph.

Ran 10.10 miles in 1 hr, 24 minutes.....average pace of 8.19 minutes per mile. Felt fantastic to get outside and run after 19 days of rest. Legs felt very heavy but the pain felt great!!
