Maintain weekly mileage at 80 or more....


Long-Term Running Goals:

train and run a 30 mile ultra-marathon.

Personal:

I am a 52 yr. old single father of four children.  I am retired after injuring my back in 2000. I had back surgery, stopped running, and gained about 80 pounds. Decided to take my health into my own hands....lost 100 pounds, went to Nepal and trekked for two months in the Himalayas...climbed almost 18,000 ft.....felt so proud of myself....began running again. I qualified for Boston in Oct. 2009. I have shifted my focus now on ultra-marathons with the hope to run my first this year.

14 miles in a time of 1 hour, 57 minutes......average pace of 8.22 minutes. legs felt good throughout this run, but I started to feel very weak the last 4 miles....needed gu or something.

Today I start my preparation for a 7 day water fast, which starts on Tuesday Nov. 18th, then I will break it on the 8th day.....Nov. 25th... and then I attend a 10 day meditation retreat in Barrie....Nov 26 till Dec 07. During this time I will not run....which is going to be so hard in itself, but this is something I really want to do.

First day of a 7 day water fast...some mild headaches of and on, probably due to the caffeine withdrawal, but hunger pains are minimal. nothing to do...cannot run, strength train, swim...a real void in my day! Tonight I am going to a meditation session for an hour and a half, so that will help...I think. I will not be able to run till after the meditation retreat on Dec. 07, so I will loose much of my conditioning, but in the long run I think it will benefit me to do this cleansing...just glad it is the start of the winter season.

Second day of a 7 day water fast. Last night I had quite bad headaches throughout the night...had a hard time sleeping. Today, the headaches are almost gone....just mild. A few hunger pains developing, but nothing unbareable!

Third day of fast....felt energetic, so I went to the gym....probably not a good idea though. Its so difficult to overcome the boredom.....thats the hardest thing so far. So far, I have not lost any weight....still 158 lbs.

Total rest day...going to end my fast today....to much going on right now and I decided that I want to be best prepared....physically...for the meditation retreat on Wednesday....although I set out to do a 7 day fast, a 4 day fast was good too, and maybe in the new year I can re-attempt the 7 day. Boredom was my greatest obstical this time.

Tomorrow I leave for Barrie to attend a Vipassana meditation retreat for 12 days....very intense! This will be my 5th one that I attended. I will not be able to blog anything for 12 days...Nov. 26 till Dec. 07. Cannot wait till Dec. 08 when I can start running again!
